OUR PRESENCE PUNJAB

THE CHALLENGES

With access to free electricity for pumping, ground water levels are depleting due to overuse of water for flood irrigation. Additionally, farmers burn paddy stubble which is impacting soil health and the environment. With high input costs and stagnant yields, farm incomes are low and there is a need to improve crop practices, organise farmers for collective action to reduce the cost of cultivation and fetch better prices for crops.

Livelihood enhancement is required for the landless community, especially women. Additionally, sanitation, including solid and liquid waste management, is a concern in communities, and there is an increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases due to alcohol and tobacco consumption, imbalanced diets and physical inactivity.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

The main focus of ACF’s water program in Punjab is on the implementation of watershed projects to improve ground water levels and reduce soil erosion. Ground water levels are also being recharged via a percolation pit and pond. Additionally, we are ensuring the availability of drinking water for every household, via tap connections, and ensuring that water is safe to drink (pre and post monsoon), by promoting water quality testing in communities.

Our main focus is on some critical issues like soil health management, crop production, crop diversification, and fruit and vegetable cultivation. Crop residue management is a crucial area where we provide awareness, training and demonstrations to encourage reduced tillage, use of super seeder machinery and overall reduction in residue burning. We also promote the supply of residue as biomass as an alternate fuel, providing additional income source to farmers. Sustainable rice is promoted via Direct Seeding Rice (DSR) approach and FPOs are promoted for collective input supply and marketing.

ACF’s health program provides both preventive and promote aspects of healthcare, with a strong focus on women, children and adolescents - implemented in the villages in collaboration with the local health and sanitation department, Panchayati Raj Institute (PRI), ASHA, AWW and youth clubs of villages. 20 ODF villages have been created and ACF also supports sanitation issues like underground drainage systems in villages. Working with local Anganwadi centres, we are improving the nutritional and health status of children. In Bathinda, with the support of Harvard University, a research program is being conducted on the behaviour change of high risk group patients in relation to diet control and physical activities.
